Emerson Park replaces a previous care home on the site, which is constrained by existing access, surrounding residential properties and existing topology. Briefed to maximise the accommodation on site Harris Irwin was able to provide an 78 bedroom care home, 42 extra care apartments and 5 assisted living apartments within the relatively small site area.
The three and four storey buildings are carefully arranged to take advantage of the sloping site and address other constraints such as avoiding overlooking of neighbouring properties.
Extensive communal facilities have been designed into the ground floor of the care home, including private dining, cinema and hairdressing, which are available for care home residents and apartment owners alike, creating and fostering a sense of community within the development.
Particular reference has been made to local vernacular found in the area and an early decision was taken to use sympathetic materials which reflect the general local vernacular. The use of brick, render and tiling respects its context while the glazing details provide a visual depth. Gables and bays were introduced to break up the elevations and to add an element of vertical emphasis to the design.
